Every woman deserves healthcare that reflects her reality. Yet for decades, medical research and data systems have overlooked female-specific health patterns. FemHealthData is changing that, with an ambitious research data infrastructure designed to put women’s physical, psychological and sexual health on the map.

FemHealthData is an research data infrastructure based at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), dedicated to improving women’s health by linking and analysing routine care data from general practice, maternity care and hospitals. By combining this data with cohort studies and online surveys, we uncover patterns in women’s health that have long remained invisible.

We operate under FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles and apply both classical epidemiological models and advanced data-driven innovation such as Natural Language Processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML).

Our mission

See her better, understand her better, care for her better - with data that reflects her reality.

Relevance

How our research benefits to society

We aim to improve healthcare for women across the life course by creating a strong and sustainable data infrastructure. By linking and analysing data from for example general practice, perinatal and hospital care, we uncover patterns that lead to better insights which ultimately results in optimised womens’ care in the future.

  • We build our work on scientific rigour and reliability. FemHealthData integrates anonymised data from primary and secondary care, cohort studies and online surveys. All data is handled with strict privacy protocols and adheres to the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles.
We combine traditional epidemiological methods with advanced data-driven analytical techniques such as Natural Language Processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) to reveal hidden insights - supporting independent, transparent and reproducible research.

    How we do this

  • FemHealthData is built on collaboration. We work in close co-creation with researchers, healthcare professionals and patient organisations. We engage with women directly to ensure our work reflects real-life needs. Our partners include Dutch UMCs, public health institutions like the RIVM, and international research centres such as Karolinska Institutet, Aarhus University, Lanchahire University and Western Sydney University. Women Representativeness in the projects are established by close collaboration with Buikencollectief and Patientenfederatie.

    How we work together

  • We translate complex data into clear, actionable insights that support day-to-day healthcare. Our Population Insight Products - such as visual reports, dashboards and policy tools - help professionals recognise their care outcomes and adjust care accordingly.

How we turn research into better care
