The BESt study

Birth Experience Study Research
Birth Experience Study
What are women’s experiences with giving birth?

With this study we investigate which positive and/or negative experiences pregnant women had during childbirth. The study consists of an online questionnaire which will be repeated every 3 years. It includes several validated questionnaires that measure overall childbirth experience, respect, autonomy, and continuity of care. The questionnaire also contains items about background information (such as age, ethnicity, income), pregnancy (complications), and childbirth (birth interventions). It also asked how the labor progressed, for example, whether it was induced and whether it ended in a cesarean section. The Buikencollectief and the Patiëntenfederatie are involved in the design of the questionnaire to ensure representation of pregnant women in this study.

The BESt-NL study targets women who gave birth in the Netherlands. The items of the online survey from the BESt study were also used in studies in Australia, Sweden, and Denmark, allowing us to examine the differences and similarities between these countries (BESt-IC).

Relevance

Insight into women’s experiences, health and wellbeing around child birth

This study provides valuable insights into women's experiences during childbirth and the impact of those experiences on their health and well-being after birth. By understanding what contributes to positive or negative birth experiences, healthcare can be improved to better support women during this critical period. The findings can inform policies and practices that promote respectful, person-centered maternity care, ultimately contributing to better maternal health outcomes.
