We link societal questions to academic research
The Science Shop for Medicine and Public Health collects scientific questions from society (citizens and societal organizations) and answers them for free.

Sometimes questions exist within our society that demand scientific research to be answered, but for which a research budget is not available (and a search on Google or ChatGPT does not give an answer). For these questions, the science shop exists! Together with bachelor and master students from Groningen (the Netherlands), the science shop carries out research studies for free. In this way, students learn about conducting research from which citizens and societal organizations can benefit. In short, this is a ‘win-win situation’.

Societal questions, academic answers

All of our research benefits society directly.

All Science Shops of the University of Groningen perform society-focused research for various (non-profit) organisations. Together with our four other science shops, we cover nearly all research questions that somebody can think of.

  • Mission

The Science Shop for Medicine and Public Health aims to make science accessible to everyone. By supporting citizens and social organizations with scientific knowledge and research methods, the shop helps them find answers to questions about medicine and public health. These questions are often explored by students during research internships, fostering mutual learning and societal engagement with science.

    Vision

The Science Shop strives to be known among citizens and organizations, especially those from groups that are often excluded or discriminated against. By giving these groups access to science and involving them in the research process, the science shop empowers them to influence the scientific agenda. This strengthens their position in society and helps maintain trust in science—particularly important in times of misinformation and distrust in authorities.
