Bringing together science and society

When I was a student, I decided to pursue a research career. This was, and still is, the best way for me to contribute to a better society. I enjoy my work as a researcher as I love to discover new knowledge and disseminate knowledge so that society can benefit from it. This opportunity to generate and disseminate knowledge was my reason to study Health Sciences and Epidemiology. As I aim to serve society, I am flexible in the methodologies that I use for my studies. A methodology should fit the research question and not the other way around. Therefore, I have gained experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methods. During the years, I realized how much value is added to the quality of research by collaborating with a diverse group of experts. Therefore, I highly value collaborations where various knowledge, experiences, views, and backgrounds are brought together. Here, I regard citizens and patients as experts as well, namely experts by experience. To serve the needs of my target groups, I find it important to involve the target groups in my research practice and bring science closer to society. The latter is what I do with our Science Shop for Medicine and Public Health, where I answer research questions that come directly from society.
