A one-size-fits-all approach is not appropriate to treat diabetes. Individualized treatment is required, often including multiple medications to manage risk factors and prevent cardiovascular and renal complications. The GIANTT database provides insight into the treatment patterns and the outcomes of treatment in the Dutch primary care setting.
GIANTT aims to support research focusing on the assessment and improvement of the quality and outcomes of treatment among patients with type 2 diabetes managed in Dutch primary care.
Patients who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes as documented in the electronic medical records of participating general practices. All general practices in the Groningen region have been asked to participate and over the years the number of participating general practices has fluctuated between 40-180.
Please visit the UMCG Research Data Catalogue for more detailed information on our data and samples.
GIANTT contains 4 main tables with the following data:

The GIANTT database is unique in terms of providing longitudinal data for a dynamic, cumulative cohort of more than 50.000 patients who are treated for type 2 diabetes in Dutch primary care settings. Since 2004, routinely available data are being collected from the electronic medical records held by a large number of general practices in the Groningen region. These include information about age, sex, prescribed medication, outcomes of diagnostic measurements, and comorbidity as documented in the primary care setting.
