Large grant awarded for future-proof Primary Care

News
The UMCG Department of Primary and Long-Term Care has been awarded a grant of 2.7 million euros from ZonMw to develop the Academic General Practice Living Lab Northeast Netherlands (AWH-NO), building on the current network AHON, for education, training and research.

The funding enables the creation of a knowledge infrastructure that strengthens collaboration between practice and academia, fostering the development of relevant knowledge for sustainable primary care in the region.

Nynke Schouwenaars (Head of the AWH-NO): ''By carrying out region-specific projects and sharing knowledge, we will contribute to future-proof, appropriate GP-care.''

The academic workplace will address regional challenges in collaboration with Regional General Practitioner Organisations (RHOs), such as DokNoord, Dokterszorg Friesland, Dokter Drenthe, Medrie en HCDO.

For collaborative projects between UMCG’s clinical departments and general practitioners, the Living Lab will serve as the key partner. Last but not least, the Living Lab aims to inspire future generations to work in primary care.

Healthcare data from over 440,000 patients available for research

Building upon the current network (AHON), further progress is being made with the establishment of AWH-NO. This development does not signal the end of AHON; rather, AWH-NO builds on the foundations already in place.

With the extensive availability of routine care data from over 300 general practices, encompassing approximately 440,000 patients, the AHON database provides a robust foundation for future research and educational opportunities in the field of primary care.
