UMCG invests almost two million euros in AI, eHealth and big data

News
The UMCG is investing heavily in the promotion of artificial intelligence (AI), data science and eHealth in healthcare. Nearly two million euros will be earmarked for the further development of this in the UMCG over the next three years.

AI in healthcare

The use of big data, AI and eHealth in healthcare has grown considerably in recent years. This development will only increase in the coming years. Today, AI is being deployed not only for research purposes, but also to provide higher quality patient care through improved diagnosis, treatment and monitoring. AI systems can recognise diseases quite accurately. Applications such as digital apps can also see which patients are deteriorating and thus predict who needs extra attention and when.

Better, affordable and more sustainable care

'As a University Medical Center we want to stay ahead of these developments and investigate how we can use AI as effectively as possible', says Prof. Dr. Marian Joëls, member of the Executive Board of the UMCG. In the coming years, we will invest in supporting our researchers who use AI and big data in research projects or studies for better, affordable and more sustainable care. We also want to better train our healthcare professionals in this domain, so that we reduce the fear of digital health technology and increase involvement in the deployment and implementation.'

Data Science Center in Health

The extra money will be used to strengthen the Data Science Center in Health (DASH) of the UMCG. DASH was founded in 2019 and has since developed into an important driver and facilitator in the developments in the field of AI and data science at the UMCG.
DASH aims to advance data science in healthcare by supporting innovative research projects and bringing together experts in data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence and eHealth. The current DASH team has been expanded with experts in AI, Big Data and eHealth. They will work within the UMCG, but also seek connections and collaborate with the region, the rest of the Netherlands and internationally.
