For Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science
Modern healthcare could not exist without biomaterials, which allow the restoration of function after oncological surgery, trauma or simply wear due to advanced age. New diagnostic tools allow faster and more accurate diagnostics and contribute to drug development and improved treatments.

We are a centre of expertise for the entire field of biomedical materials science and the application of biomedical materials in basic materials science, medical product development, method development, and clinical evaluation. Our research contributes to the long-lasting well-being of patients.

The W.J. Kolff Institute for Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science was established on 8 October 1997. The Institute has been named after Willem Johan Kolff, who as a resident in internal medicine at the University of Groningen developed the first functioning artificial kidney in the 1940s and has saved the lives of millions of patients ever since.
