There is a national call (Coalitie Kansrijke Start/ Coalition Solid Start) for a transition to social maternity care in which professionals and organizations from obstetric and social care work together to contribute to adequate care for women in vulnerable situations.

In the Netherlands large variations exists in adverse perinatal outcomes, caused by an accumulation of medical and non-medical factors. Although promising approaches to improve outcomes for vulnerable women and their newborns have been developed in Groningen and South Limburg, effective dissemination and sustainable implementation of these approaches is the next challenge.
We aim to (1) optimize both approaches to come to recommendations for national roll-out, and (2) to investigate the impact of the optimized approaches on the well-being and self-direction of pregnant women and their (unborn) child and on perinatal maternal and child outcomes, in both regions.

Relevance

Societal Relevance

n Groningen and South Limburg more women live in vulnerable situations compared to other parts of the Netherlands. Due to unfavorable social determinants and lifestyle factors, numbers indicate that a relatively large proportion of pregnant women in these regions have a high risk of developing adverse perinatal outcomes.

Evaluating the impact of both regional approaches on perinatal outcomes is essential for designing adequate and culturally appropriate social maternity care. Besides it is also essential to investigate the effectiveness of the medical-social collaboration, and the impact on women's well-being and self-direction.
