Section
The establishment and execution of research within the field of vascular surgery have a rich and long history. Multiple research lines have been developed for all clinical focal points (endovascular and open complex aortic surgery, carotid interventions, and complex peripheral arterial vascular diseases), with a focus on translational and clinically applied research.

In addition to vascular surgeons, the team of researchers includes a post-doc in vascular surgery, several PhD candidates, student researchers, and students from the technical medicine field. Vascular surgeons collaborate closely with their clinical partners at UMCG, such as thoracic surgery, nuclear medicine, anaesthesia, interventional radiology, and infectious diseases. Furthermore, there is a strong and intensive collaboration with the Department of Biomaterials & Biomedical Technology (BBT) and the University of Twente. Excellent collaboration exists with vascular surgical clinics within and outside the Netherlands (e.g., Bologna, Manchester, and Genoa) for both retrospective and prospective studies. Each year, the vascular surgery field is involved in about 70 scientific articles, numerous (inter)national scientific presentations, and several vascular surgeons serve as faculty members at key national and international vascular surgical symposia.
