Research lines of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Department

The research program of the department Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is in accordance with the research programs of the research centra, institutes and schools of the Faculty of Medical Sciences and the UMCG, including:

The research program is coordinated by prof dr FKL Spijkervet, prof dr A Vissink, dr B van Minnen, prof dr MJH Witjes, dr K Delli, and mrs L Kempers.

To carry out the majority of research projects, there is an important collaboration with researchers from other research groups within as well as outside the Faculty of Medical Sciences, both nationally and internationally. The department has obtained research grants from the industry for performing research on implantology and Sjögren's disease,  as well as grants from Horizon 2020, National Institutes of Health (NIH), ZonMW, KWF, ReumaNederland and other funding organizations.

For a number of research fields, including implantology, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, oral oncology and research in Sjögren's disease, our research is also internationally recognized as world leading and influential. Researchers in these fields also actively participate, either as coordinators, sections heads or members, in working groups of the European Association of Osteointegration (EAO), European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR), American College of Rheumatology (ACR), European Association for Oral Medicine (EAOM), World Workshop on Oral Medicine (WWOM), Multinational Association Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC), European Society TMJ Surgeons (ESTMJS), American Society TMJ Surgeons (ASTMJS), and the Strasbourg Osteosynthesis Research Group (SORG).
