Research focusing on individual differences

As a researcher I focus on individual differences in psychopathology and response to treatment in older patients. Each patient is unique in the environment they live in and how they behave, the symptoms they experience, and how they respond to treatment. As a result, traditional group-based studies yield results that often do not apply to individual patients. This creates a gap between what is being considered ‘evidence based’ and what works best in clinical practice. In my research I therefore focus on the n-of-1 study design. This type of study yields results for each patient separately. I use n-of-1 designs to identify individual differences in processes underlying psychiatric disorders, and to identify which treatment works best for whom.
