Groningen Initiative to ANalyse Type 2 diabetes Treatment (GIANTT) Facility
GIANTT collects data of people with type 2 diabetes from a large number of general practices in the Groningen region. These data give us insight in the diabetes treatment provided and the outcomes of treatment in primary care.

Diabetes treatment is not one-size-fits-all. Although most people need multiple medications to treat risk factors and prevent cardiovascular and renal complications, individualised treatment is needed. The GIANTT database gives insight in the treatment patterns and outcomes over time. Our aim is to support research focusing on assessing and improving the quality and outcomes of treatment in a ‘real-world’ primary care population.

The GIANTT database is unique by providing longitudinal data for a dynamic, cumulative cohort of >50.000 patients treated for type 2 diabetes in primary care. Routinely available data have been collected since 2004 from the electronic medical records in a large number of general practices in the Groningen region. This includes information about age, sex, prescribed medication, outcomes of diagnostic measurements and comorbidity as documented in primary care.

Booking information

Validated data are available for the period 2004-2014. New data will be imported in 2021. Given the dynamic inclusion of general practices as well as patients, patient numbers depend on the time period and research question. Please contact us when you are considering to use GIANTT data for scientific research. Data can be made available at request after approval by the GIANTT steering committee.
