Personalized Medicine: How can we optimize treatment for the individual patient?

As Head of the Department of Genetics, I lead a department that encompasses the Clinical Genetics outpatient clinic, the Genetics Diagnostics laboratory, the Systems Genetics group, and a large research team.

The field of genetics is rapidly evolving and highly dynamic. The work of clinical geneticists is changing, driven by new diagnostic technologies and the growing availability of tools such as artificial intelligence (AI). In addition, the first therapeutic options for rare genetic diseases—such as gene therapy—are now becoming available. These developments not only influence the work of clinical geneticists, they also have a major impact on our diagnostic laboratory.

Within our research group, our mission is to improve health and healthcare by understanding how genetics—both human genetics and that of our microbiomes—interact with each other and with the environment in which we live. My personal research line aims to answer this question for patients with chronic respiratory diseases. In the Netherlands, we are actively pursuing this goal within the P4O2 (Precision Medicine for more Oxygen) consortium.
