About PETRA

How does it work?

Through diary-based assessments, you are asked several times a day about your mood, symptoms, surroundings, activities, and context. You complete these assessments yourself on your smartphone. By regularly reflecting on your wellbeing, you gain greater insight and control over how you are doing.

The type of diary you will use depends on the question you want to answer. For example, you may want to know what effect your treatment is having (both positive and negative), or you may wish to monitor whether your symptoms remain stable to prevent them from worsening. Every care need requires its own tailored diary. With PETRA, you can customise your diary to suit your goals — not only the content, but also the frequency and duration of the measurements.

The animation videos below explain how PETRA works:

PETRA Database

The PETRA database collects data from the diaries completed by patients in order to gain insight into their mental health in daily life. This data is used for scientific research aimed at improving the quality of care and investigating which treatments work best — and for whom.

The PETRA database is managed by the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) and complies with all legal, medical, and ethical standards to safeguard participants' privacy.

PETRA Consortium

To support the clinical implementation of PETRA and to jointly explore opportunities for innovative mental health research using the PETRA database, the PETRA Database Consortium was established. This collaboration currently includes the following five mental healthcare institutions:
