Health inequalities during the life course: a Partnership with the Kosice Institute for Society and Health in Slovakia.
As Department of Health Sciences we have a special partnership with the Kosice Institute for Society and Health (KISH), which is part of the Pavel Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (Slovakia). The main focus of our research at the KISH is on the development and health of children and youth, and on health and use of health care of vulnerable groups like Roma people and people with chronic diseases.

Our joint mission is to produce scientific evidence on health and determinants of health of vulnerable populations in Slovakia directly applicable in policy-making and intervention practice addressing health inequalities.

Within the partnership we focus on four research areas:

  1. 'School-aged children and healthy development' is focused on health and health-related behaviour among school-aged children within their social context.
  2. Vulnerable children'' is focused on emotional and behavioural problems and trajectory in the systems of care.
  3. 'Specific patient groups' explores how to eliminate health inequalities caused by chronic diseases and how to promote quality of life in patients with such conditions.
  4. 'Marginalised Roma' explores the disparities in the health outcomes and exposures, and particular mechanisms within the specific context of (the most vulnerable) marginalized Roma communities.

This researchproject is part of the UMCG researchgroup Youth and community
