First edition Summer School 'Data Science and AI in Health' a success

The first edition of the summer school 'Data Science and AI in Health' took place from 9-10 July, 2021. The participants from Groningen and abroad were motivated individuals with an interest in biomedical sciences, data science and AI. During this summer school they received inspiring lectures by, among others, Peter Van Ooijen, Elena Sügis,Els Maeckelberghe and Sunyi Zheng, and got to know each other through social events and group assignments.

Enlight Scholarships

The first version of the summer school attracted great interest from students and three participants have been awarded an ENLIGHT European University scholarship. ENLIGHT is a network of nine European universities wih the ambition to transform higher education and empower learners as globally engaged citizens.

Educational program 2021

The overarching theme of the summer school was pulmonary diseases. Within this context, we explored how diagnosis and treatment can be improved with the help of data science and AI. During the first part of the afternoon there were lectures. The second part of the afternoon consisted of assignments, with final presentations and a panel discussion on Friday. Throughout the week, there were online social activities. 

'The Summer School Data Science and AI in Health offered a great introduction into data science and AI in medical research. Something I really liked about the summer school was how much attention was given to the planning and possible pitfalls of projects utilizing data science and AI. Ethical issues, project planning and data issues are subjects which might be less exciting, but they are very important to consider when setting up a project and often neglected by those not very familiar with data science and AI.'

2022 Edition

Due to the huge interest, we can already announce that the Summer School Data Science and AI in Health, Edition 2022, will be organised again next year (4-8 July, 2022, Groningen, The Netherlands). If conditions (COVID-19 pandemic) permit, the Summer School Data Science and AI in Health 2022 will take place at the University Medical Center Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands.
