Engage with a variety of end users and non-academic stakeholders to stimulate innovation in healthcare and share knowledge
In order to achieve maximal societal impact, UMCG researchers engage with a variety of end users and non-academic stakeholders, with the ultimate goal to stimulate innovation in healthcare and share knowledge.

The UMCG aims to create and maintain connections to society from the perspective of Open Science and is part of the Open Science programme of the University of Groningen.

Support in public engagement

Are you a researcher at the UMCG interested to collaborate with non-academic stakeholders?

  • For collaborations with the private sector, please contact the UMCG Center for Development and Innovation, visit CDI.
  • For collaborations with the public, by e.g. joining running initiatives as the Healthy Ageing week, Noorderzon or ZpannendZernike, please contact team Strategy & External Relations.
  • For more information or support on patient involvement, visit "patiëntenparticipatie" (in Dutch only)
  • A very important group of stakeholders are our patients that contribute to research by taking part in research studies and clinical trials. In order to involve patients and patient organisations at various stages during research and care, the UMCG has appointed a committee on patient involvement, which initiates activities to promote and create awareness about patient involvement in research e.g.: trainings in patient involvement for researchers, blogs on patient involvement and a recurring symposium in which researchers show their good practices in patient involvement, together with the patients they work with. In addition, a reference person was recently appointed within research support as contact person. Furthermore, a handbook for patient involvement in care, education and research is currently being developed together with patient organization Zorgbelang Groningen.

Send email if you have any questions on patient involvement in research

  • The research performed at the UMCG creates impact on society in a large variety of ways: from improving welfare, developing new technology, starting new companies to influencing policy at local, national and EU level.

To help UMCG researchers, clinicians and support staff improve their views on impact and broaden their collaborations, the UMCG impact team offers training, impact planning sessions, examples in form of case studies and tools such as guided templates.

  • The University of Groningen and UMCG introduce a pilot for a public engagement seed fund.
The seed fund provides the opportunity for scientific staff of the UG and UMCG to get up to €5,000 for ongoing or future public engagement projects. All submissions are screened for eligibility by a jury consisting of University of Groningen and UMCG employees, after which four eligible projects are randomly selected to get the funding they requested.  More information about this can be found here.
