Professor of Immunoendocrinology

I’m a scientist and active teacher with a strong focus on biomedical application of carbohydrates and effects on immunity. My research is mostly dedicated to finding new innovative cures for Diabetes Mellitus and gastrointestinal disorders. Our group applies their knowledge and technologies to improve biomaterials for application in bioartificial organs and to influence immunity in consumers of carbohydrates. We have a major focus on how intestinal barrier function can be influenced by specific molecules by either directly interacting with host-receptors or by modulating fermentation processes of gut microbiota. We have shown that this can contribute to prevention of many diseases including autoimmune disorders such as Type 1 Diabetes. Also, we have a > 20 year experience on research on modulating responses to biomaterials applied for immunoisolation of cells by using complex carbohydrates. More than 300 peer reviewed publications have followed from our research. I am also a passionate teacher and senior teaching qualification grantee and involved in several courses related to immunity and physiology.
