In Laboratory medicine, substantial progress in our understanding of mechanisms of disease, coupled with extraordinary technical advances and progress in data sciences, creates an exciting and challenging field of research. These developments generate important new opportunities to create multidisciplinary convergences between the traditional laboratory diagnostic disciplines, leading the way to integrated diagnostics. The challenge facing this new era of laboratory medicine is the appropriate implementation of new tools and technologies to improve patient care, also in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.
Our services include providing established research diagnostic tests, assistance with sample collection and processing Project Laboratory (umcgresearch.org), and expert advice on the implementation of diagnostic tests in research projects, leveraging our clinical and analytical expertise. We also create and validate innovative methods in collaboration with other researchers, and may offer customized diagnostic tests that are not typically available.
Multiple research areas are dedicated to creating innovative (multi-parameter) diagnostic methods and enhancing diagnostic accuracy, with the goal of improving patient care and test outcomes.
We take part in extensive cohort studies such as Lifelines, Lifelines-Next, Transplant-line, OncoLifeS, and Prevend.
Additionally, we integrate near-patient testing methods to enhance the quality of care provided to patients.
We educate students to understand disease mechanisms and novel diagnostic techniques.
