Synergistic Nano-Therapeutic Approach for Psoriasis: Targeting TNF-α and IL-17 Pathways via Transdermal Delivery (SKINNOVATE)

I obtained my PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), where I developed nanostructured systems for the treatment of autoimmune diseases and investigated their immunomodulatory potential. During my doctorate, I had the opportunity to conduct part of my research at Harvard Medical School, where I explored how nanoformulations interact with biological systems and modulate immune responses.

Following my PhD, I worked in the pharmaceutical industry, where I contributed to projects on innovation and new technology assessment, focusing on advanced drug delivery systems and formulation strategies. This experience provided practical insight into the challenges of translating nanomedicine from the bench to patients.

I will join Professor Hélder Almeida’s group at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) as a MSCA Postdoctoral Fellow. My project, SKINNOVATE, focuses on developing patient-friendly transdermal therapies for psoriasis. The approach combines hybrid lipid–polymer nanoparticles incorporated in microneedle systems to co-deliver a TNF-inhibitor and a small interfering RNA (siRNA) therapy. By optimizing the formulation, characterizing its properties, and testing its performance in vitro and in ex vivo psoriasis models, SKINNOVATE aims to develop nanotechnology-based therapies that improve treatment outcomes, minimize side effects, and support patient adherence.
