Focusing on the patient journey and nursing impact in critical care

 As a nurse-scientist in the field of critical care, my research focuses on shared decision-making and long-term outcomes that matter from the patient’s perspective. With advances in healthcare, the population surviving critical illness is increasingly older. Many of these patients experience multimorbidity, resulting in prolonged recovery trajectories. By highlighting the contribution of the nursing profession to patient-centred care, I aim to generate insights into more holistic outcomes—encompassing physical, mental, social, and societal dimensions—through studies that explore the patient journey in complex care settings. My research offers a perspective that deepens our understanding of stress responses to both predictable and unpredictable changes in human life, while emphasizing the vital role of nurses in guiding and supporting patients throughout these processes.
