DASH Webinar: From record to risk estimate: using clinical care data for health research

News
Clinical care data offer a wealth of opportunities to researchers, but also have their own unique pitfalls. So how can we turn patient records into meaningful risk estimates?

With the advent of stronger computers and digitalised healthcare systems, came the opportunity to store regular care data and subsequently use these data for research purposes. These data are unique in that they simultaneously cover a large number of individuals and a large selection of clinically relevant measures. In addition, they are a direct reflection of the patients normally seen by physicians. This makes such datasets highly valuable for research, as they have the potential to generate evidence is a relatively short time period without the need for laborious and expensive data collection associated with clinical trials and cohort studies.

However, these data also come with their unique quirks that researchers need to be aware of to deliver reliable results. In this webinar, Sophie Bots will introduce the theory behind clinical care data-based research and translate this into practice using examples from her own work on sex differences research, providing a practical guide to performing research with clinical care data.

Sophie Bots

Sophie Bots has a background in Epidemiology and is interested in using so-called ‘real-world data’ for research purposes. She is interested in both novel methodological developments on this topic and how these can be translated to daily research practice. Her PhD at the University Medical Center Utrecht was based on a large clinical care database set that she operationalised and subsequently used to address pressing evidence gaps in knowledge about sex-specific safety and efficacy of cardiovascular medication. She is currently employed as a postdoctoral researcher at Utrecht University on a project to monitor adverse events of Covid-19 vaccines in Europe.
