€6.8 million grant for groundbreaking research into biological age

News
The Dutch Research Agenda (NWA) has awarded a grant of €6.8 million to the BIO-COMPaSS (BIOlogical age-driven, COMmunal, Personalised System for Sustainable health promotion) research project. This ambitious research focuses on the use of biological age as motivation for healthier behaviour.

The project leader is Prof. Richard Jaspers of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. BIO-COMPaSS is the result of intensive collaboration between Maastricht University (Prof. Kenneth Meijer), Wageningen University (Prof. Renger Witkamp), the University Medical Centre Groningen (Prof. Claudine Lamoth) and VU Amsterdam (Prof. Mirjam Pijnappels) and a national network of knowledge institutes, social partners and companies.

Erja Portegijs (Centre for Human Movement Sciences), Marco Demaria (Eriba) and Eva Corpeleijn (Epidemiology) from the UMCG are also involved in this consortium. The research uses data from Lifelines.

In the study, citizens, scientists and companies are working together to determine which biomarkers and personalised exercise and nutrition plans motivate people most to live healthier lives. The ultimate goal is ambitious: to reduce biological age by five years, which should lead to a healthier population.

More information about this consortium and all parties involved, can be found on the NWA-website.
