€1.4 million Open Science NL Grant for improved access to socio-medical data

News
A national consortium bringing together all Dutch University Medical Centers through the Data in the Region coalition has been awarded a €1.4 million grant from Open Science NL. The project, Unified Governance for Availability, Access, and Use of Socio-Medical Data, is coordinated by Raun van Ooijen, from the department of Health Sciences, as part of the UMCNL ‘Data in the Region’ coalition.

Addressing a critical need for connected data

Social and environmental factors play a key role in improving population health and creating sustainable healthcare requires more than medical treatment. However, data across healthcare, prevention, and the social domain are often fragmented, poorly connected, and difficult to access. Various regions have already started with building ‘nodes’ to connect these data. A unified governance framework and shared data infrastructure will be developed to improve the availability, access, and use of socio-medical data. This is crucial for evaluating preventive measures and for broader research into health, healthcare, and societal participation. Researchers will benefit from access to pseudonymised or synthetic data, healthcare professionals will receive training and practical support, policymakers will be able to work with aggregated data and dashboards, and citizens will gain accessible insights into health and wellbeing.

Building open infrastructures for the future

By developing this infrastructure, the project will create a sustainable national foundation for socio-medical data that is open, safe, and accessible. The consortium collaborates with other relevant Dutch initiatives and organisations, such as Health-RI, ODISSEI, TNO, Lifelines, Netherlands Cohort Consortium, and PHDNL to strengthen national open data infrastructures and promote cross-regional socio-medical collaboration.
