Inventory and platform of research groups with expertise in cohort studies

Constitute and develop an inventory and dashboard of Research Groups that run cohort sites enabling them to connect and respond to infectious diseases epidemics or pandemics
The work is divided into two parts, part 1: development of an inventory survey instrument to collect data for an international cohort database and, part 2: development of a pandemic preparedness cohort platform in the form of a dashboard.

Part 1: Development of an international cohort database and inventory survey instrument

A survey with its underlying database was developed to elicit information from each participating Research Group that will be critical to its readiness to pivot and respond to future emerging infections and pandemics.

Using the survey, we obtain information on the capacities and capabilities of research groups that have conducted clinico-epidemiological studies in the past and/or are currently conducting cohort studies on vector-borne diseases in the Global South and LMICs.

We aim to include research groups that are well-versed in the methodologies, principles, and practices associated with cohort studies.

The survey and database were designed using REDCap® hosted by the UMCG to ensure secure data collection.

Areas of capacity surveyed include:

  • Names, institutions and ORCID iDs of a contact person, local project coordinator, and/or (co-)PI (s)
  • Contact information (work e-mail address)
  • Geographical information
  • Expertise of the research group and their collaborating network
  • Previous and/or current target groups and pathogens studied
  • Research capabilities
  • Laboratory and biobanking capabilities
  • Data sharing capabilities
  • Access to local ethical committee
  • Funding bodies

Part 2: Development of a pandemic preparedness cohort platform (dashboard) to present the searchable inventory

The aim of the pandemic preparedness cohort platform is to develop a more connected and potentially more coordinated network of institutions that can respond to any potential public health emergency posed by emerging or re-emerging pathogens. The inventory of institutions involved in arboviral and other vector-borne diseases (including malaria) research in the Global South can subsequently be used to identify needs and opportunities for collaboration in surveillance and research, and to serve as a communication platform for the promotion of and access to tools developed by CONTAGIO and other consortia.
