ZonMW grant for Joukje van der Naalt and Bram Jacobs

News
Joukje van der Naalt and Bram Jacobs from the Department of Neurology have received a ZonMW Doelmatigheid Grant of 780,000 euros. In collaboration with Erasmus MC, they will investigate the (cost) effectiveness of an early intervention in patients with mild traumatic brain injury, the BRAIN-RESET study.

Every year, 85,000 patients in the Netherlands report to the emergency room with traumatic brain injury. In most cases, the injury is a concussion. A large proportion of patients still have symptoms six months after the accident, and a quarter of them have not resumed daily activities by then. This is a major social problem associated with high healthcare costs. Early treatment is expected to reduce symptoms, allow patients to resume work and/or studies sooner and improve quality of life. In this study, two different early treatments (symptom-focused treatment by physiotherapy and/or occupational therapy; and psychoeducation about symptoms by telephone counselling) are investigated and compared with usual care (wait-and-see policy).

Several hospitals in the Netherlands are participating in this study, which will start in 2025.
