ZN’s decision to support URinControl is part of a broader effort to integrate digital solutions into hybrid care models, aligning with national healthcare goals. With this new recognition and financial support, URinControl is expected to expand its impact, providing patients and healthcare providers with a reliable, evidence-based digital tool for managing urinary incontinence. This development is a first, constructive effort towards the broader adoption of digital health solutions, reinforcing the need for systemic innovation alongside technological advancements.
As the project team says: “This is a new step toward sustainable financing for health apps. We are very proud to contribute to this development with the URinControl app. It demonstrates that digital innovation also requires other systems—such as healthcare itself and its financing—to innovate. Over the past years, as general practitioner researchers from the Department of Primary and Long-Term Care, we have made significant progress in collaboration with our developer, Curavista BV, and with the support of the UMCG Innovation Center. It is fantastic to see Zorgverzekeraars Nederland now taking this important step toward sustainable financing. This ensures that scientifically validated health apps receive a valued place in healthcare. We look forward to the coming year, in which we can further establish this position within the healthcare system.”
With the URinControl app, patients can manage uncomfortable symptoms in an accessible and practical manner. This leads to immediate health improvements and cost effectiveness. The project provides women with a good alternative treatment for urine loss and creates impact when it comes to developing, evaluating, and implementing digital innovations in healthcare. With attention in the national media and on social media, the app helps normalizing urine loss and minimizing the taboo. The impact on healthcare, policy, and culture is growing thanks to collaboration with professional associations, health insurance companies (VGZ, ONVZ, digizo.nu), and medical and societal parties such as informative websites and pharmacies.
The UMCG Innovation Center is proud to support the development and implementation of initiatives such as the URinControl app, an innovative solution addressing societal challenges through digital health interventions. Through the dedicated efforts of Anne Loohuis and her team, the URinControl app has set a benchmark for future digital healthcare solutions. We are happy to contribute to projects that not only improve patient outcomes but also support sustainable, evidence-based innovations in the healthcare system.
