Symposium ‘Depression and Beyond: Towards Sustainable Recovery’ – video recording – 11 March 2026

Depression is a common mental disorder. Even after recovery, many people continue to experience residual symptoms. They are no longer depressed, but they also don’t quite feel like their old selves yet. These symptoms can make daily life more challenging and may also increase the risk of relapse.

During the mini symposium we organized on March 11th 2026 at the UMCG, we discussed what people may face after recovering from depression, which factors increase their vulnerability to a new depressive episode, and how relapse might be prevented. An expert-by-experience shared what it is like to feel ‘released’ after completing treatment. In addition, a primary care professional explained how, in that role, one can contribute to recovery and relapse prevention.

The symposium was organized by UMCG, RGOC, and DepressieNet. Afterwards, an information market took place showcasing a selection of current relapse prevention options, followed by a networking event for healthcare professionals, people with a vulnerability to depression, and other interested parties.

Aim of the symposium

During this symposium, we provided an overview of where we currently stand regarding relapse prevention after depression. We reflected on the existing treatment options, the (residual) symptoms and challenges that people with depression — as well as clinicians — encounter in practice, and the treatment mechanisms and practical tools that may help prevent relapse and support sustainable recovery.
