SONDA-EMP Research Project: Eye-Tracking Technology and AI for Cost-Effective Screening and Rehabilitation of Eye and Brain Disorders

The Department of Ophthalmology at the University Medical Center Groningen conducts scientific research on the eye, eye disorders, and the interaction between the eye and the brain.

One of the projects in which the UMCG Department of Ophthalmology is participating aims to investigate whether the SONDA-EMP method (a combination of eye-tracking technology and AI) contributes to cost-effective screening and rehabilitation for eye and brain disorders.

In this context, SONDA-EMP is being used, among other things, to enable accessible glaucoma screening in primary care, with the participation of general practitioners, opticians, and optometrists. The goal is to detect people with glaucoma in a timely manner without leading to unnecessary referrals to secondary care. The project also examines whether this contributes to the effective and efficient use of healthcare capacity in the Northern Netherlands and whether it can lead to a sustainable blueprint for regional and national ophthalmic care.

This project is being carried out in collaboration with partners Koninklijke Visio and Reyedar and is co-funded by the EU Just Transition Fund.
