In a sold-out tent at Noorderzon, an audience joined to watch a performance by researchers from the UMCG. In scientific research, men were long regarded as the standard. But women are not just ‘smaller men’. To provide women with the care they deserve, these researchers work on projects that investigate female-specific care. Together, they held a successful and interactive performance at Noorderzon.

The audience members first played a quiz, testing their knowledge on several topics. They learned that boys and girls may need different dosage levels compared to adults, but also to each other. The researchers talked about the impact menopause or endometriosis can have on a woman. Or how alternative medications can interact with prescribed medications. Through tiny 3D-printed models distributed amongst the crowd, the audience got to see how standard implants for hip fractures fit differently on men and women.

Science on stage All this information was presented to the audience in a fun, theatrical way. Some researchers played the role of patient or doctor, child or menopausal woman. Combining research with drama at the Noorderzon festival proved to be a successful combination!
