Pulmonologist Profile

The main focus of my research is treatment of chronic respiratory insufficiency by applying intermittent or continuous ventilatory support, not only in patients with COPD but also in patients with a neuromuscular disorder (NMD) . Current research in COPD is focused on what is happening inside the lung when patients are ventilated every night. Does it lead to less inflammation and might lung function even get better. In addition we try to improve our ventilatory strategy by using tools like EMG and body plethysmography. In patients with a NMD we try to unravel which patient (phenotyping) has the most benefit by chronic ventilatory support. Finally research in telemonitoring is helping us to know if patients can be treated safely at home and does this reduce costs?
