Open Access

Our achievement: 100% open access
Our achievement: 100% open access
Open access publishing contributes to transparency and openness in science and makes research results visible to the whole community. The UMCG achieved the national ambition of 100% open access publishing as of 2021.

The UMCG has an ‘open access policy’. In short, researchers are asked to explore their possibilities for publishing open access using the gold or hybrid routes. If such is not possible, the article will be published closed access.

Based on the ‘Taverne amendment’ (to the Dutch Copy right law), publications by UMCG authors are automatically made open access available through the institutional repository (Pure) six months after their first publication in a journal or edited book. This amendment is implemented by the Medical Library.

Open access services for researchers

At the UMCG, the Medical Library offers multiple services to facilitate open access publication.

To find out about various types of open access, how to deal with the costs of open access publishing and much more, we recommend following the workshop or webinar: “Are you ready for publishing open access?” provided by the Medical Library.

General question about publishing open science? Send an email or visit the Medical Library Guide Open Access.

  • Do you want to know whether your accepted article can be published open access free of charge? Prior to submission, send an email to [email protected]. The Medical Library will check and inform you whether/how the manuscript can be published open access free of charge or with a significant discount.

In case the manuscript will be published closed access, the Medical Library will deposit the publication as green open access in the UMCG Pure repository for free.
