The province of Groningen faces significant demographic challenges, including an aging population and youth migration, which place pressure on economic and societal well-being. Low levels of digital literacy among a large segment of the population further exacerbate these issues. This project aims to address these challenges by improving digital literacy and enhancing access to digital healthcare, fostering regional quality of life and economic growth.
Initiated by the Digital Literacy Coalition (DLC), the project runs from September 2024 to September 2028 and is led by the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) in collaboration with the University of Groningen, Hanze University of Applied Sciences, NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences, and several actively committed companies and healthcare institutions. It focuses on three key areas: a design lab for digital healthcare technology, the development of innovative care pathways, and initiatives to enhance digital skills through education and training.
Groningen contends with an aging and shrinking population, resulting in a diminished workforce and increasing healthcare demands. The development and implementation of digital healthcare processes remain limited, leaving many residents unable to leverage technological advancements. These challenges are compounded by the region's lower socioeconomic status, which contributes to poorer health outcomes and lower levels of digital literacy.
The project aims to increase digital literacy, improve access to healthcare, and stimulate economic growth in the Groningen region. This will enhance the region’s quality of life and prosperity, with lasting positive effects for the local community and beyond. Additionally, the project will establish a robust network of experts dedicated to developing and implementing accessible digital healthcare in Groningen, creating a foundation for sustainable innovation.
