To preserve scientific integrity and promote responsible research, the Board of Directors of the UMCG has adopted the UMCG Research Code 2023, which came into effect on November 1, 2023. These guidelines were developed to empower researchers with a clear framework to conduct scientific research that meets legal and other agreements for responsible research.

This code is applicable to all staff engaged in research, including students, visiting faculty, administrative staff, management, and UMCG employees conducting research abroad. Therefore, everyone's expected to get acquainted with this code and, more importantly, to adhere to it.

The code is built on five key research integrity principles: Honesty, Scrupulousness, Transparency, Independence, and Responsibility. Furthermore, it elucidates pertinent legal and other obligations that must be adhered to. To support research staff, it comprehensively outlines the measures in place to facilitate compliance with these principles and obligations.

Compared to the 2018 version, this update covers a wider range of topics. It dives into:

  1. ChatGPT
  2. Diversity and Inclusion
  3. Knowledge security
  4. Conflicting interests
  5. Peer review of manuscripts and research proposals
  6. Recognition and Rewards

This is a big step, allowing UMCG researchers to conduct responsible research at the highest level of scientific integrity.
