Chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, persistent muscle aches – these are examples of complaints for which in many cases no physical cause can be found. As a result, these complaints are quickly labeled 'psychological'. Incorrect, says Professor of Psychosomatics Judith Rosmalen. She conducts research into the origin, prevention and treatment of misunderstood complaints, in which she also wants to combat some stubborn prejudices.
