The Max Gruber Prize is awarded biannually to the best peer reviewed publication in Biochemistry or Cell Biology, produced by a PhD student of the University of Groningen, who should be first author on the paper.

The main body of the experimental work must have been carried out in Groningen. In a mandatory letter of recommendation, the supervisor should explicitly state the significance of the first author’s contribution, particularly in case of a multi-authored research paper. In case of a joint first authorship, PhD students can share the prize; however, in case of a joint first authorship with a postdoc, only the PhD student (as first author) is eligible. Especially in these cases, the importance of the relative contribution of each proposed PhD candidate has to be clearly argued.
