I am full professor of Molecular Oncology at the Department of Medical Oncology. In addition, I am the director of the Cancer Research Center Groningen (CRCG). My research focuses on how normal cells and cancer cells deal with DNA damage, and how this knowledge can be used to improve cancer therapy. Using cell biological, genetic and biochemical techniques, we aim to dissect the mechanisms that allow cells to resolve DNA lesion and uncover the consequences when these mechanisms are defective. In close collaboration with clinicians and bioinformaticians, we integrate our studies with the analysis of patient samples, to ultimately apply our knowledge to improve cancer treatment.
