Since the start of 2022, Martin is director of the Innovation Center of the UMCG. He received his PhD in biochemistry in Groningen and worked in both academia and industry. His academic research was on protein turnover and lipid metabolism. He has more than 18 years of drug discovery experience in pharmaceutical industry at NV Organon (now MSD) within a broad range of therapeutic areas: thrombosis, atherosclerosis, women’s health, metabolic diseases, hormone dependent cancers, and inflammatory diseases. In his position at Organon he was heading a research department on Molecular Pharmacology and DMPK. He managed projects in public-private partnership and international collaborations and has a track-record in implementing new drug discovery strategies and improving organizational performance. In 2011 he moved to the UMCG and became director of the Graduate School of Medical Science, a job which he combined with facilitating collaborations between academia and industry.
