Li Wienen won ‘de Gouden Vlam’!

‘De Gouden Vlam’ is a national competition for the best MBO graduation report.

Li did her internship in ERIBA under supervision of Stijn Mouton and Lisa Glazenburg. The aim of her project was to optimize methods to isolate RNA from Tetraselmis convolutae, a species of photosynthetic algae. Photosynthetic algae are notorious for the isolation of nucleic acids because they contain high levels of diverse factors inhibiting extraction and downstream applications. Thanks to her motivated attitude and meticulous work, Li was able to optimize a method for the successful extraction of high quality RNA which enabled sequencing and transcriptome assembly of this algae species. This work was discussed in an excellent report which resulted in this price.
