(Former) PhD-student at UMCG Laura Kracht has received the Tekke Huizinga Award 2023 for her exceptional cum laude thesis, 'The Kaleidoscope of Microglia Phenotypes,' completed in 2022 under the supervision of Bart Eggen, Professor of Molecular Neurobiology.

This esteemed award, accompanied by a €5000 prize to promote and stimulate research, was presented by Jos Kosterink, professor of hospital and clinical pharmacy and chairman of the Tekke Huizinga fund, at the kick-off event of the new research institutes on 8 December in the Red Hall of the UMCG. Although Laura herself could not attend Bart Eggen took the floor on her behalf.

The decision to award Laura this honour was prompted by her impressive combination of mechanistic laboratory work and analysis of patient material, especially postmortem brain tissue. Her thesis stood out for its concise summaries and engaging graphic representations of each experimental chapter. Laura's contributions led to prestigious publications in leading journals, including an article in Science.
