What did the Innovation Center help you with?
My name is Maarten de Jong and I am head nurse of both the Department of Surgical Oncology and Abdominal Surgery and the Outpatient Clinic Oncology 2.

What innovation did you work on or are you still working on?

I’m working on the warm handover via video calling. When I was studying ‘Management in Healthcare’, we had to innovate something for a project, so we organized a reflective session for patients who were about to undergo major surgery. They mentioned that they often faced difficulties because the home care workers were unaware of the type of procedure they had and everything that it entailed.

To improve that, we conducted warm handovers a few times. District nurses then would come to the UMCG. Although it worked well, the travel time for the nursing staff was long, making the barrier high. So, we came up with the idea to do the handover via video calls. In this way, the home care nurse has the opportunity to ask questions directly. We often also involve a family member or loved one of the patient, which is easier using video calling.

We are currently in a pilot phase, but it’s going well. Patients are pleased because they get to speak to the nurse and because they can directly make good arrangements, which creates more peace in their minds. A home care nurse whom I am still in contact with also indicates that the home care sector is also really eager for this.

What challenges did you face during the innovation process?

When I started this project, video calling was not standard practice in het UMCG. Therefore, it was unclear which system would be most suitable, as it had to be compatible with the systems of the UMCG. Additionally, the UMCG is a large hospital so the challenges are substantial. Now that the pilot phase has concluded, we are striving to further integrate it as a supplement within healthcare. While it may not be essential for every patient, it can make a significant difference for many.

What did the Innovation Center help you with?

The Innovation Center has been very helpful in assisting us with the process of advancing our project, and ultimately, reaching the pilot phase. For example, they connected us with individuals working on the Electronic Patient Record, or others involved in video calling initiatives. They also aided us in creating a patient journey and provided support for policy-related issues, as well as promoting the project within departments. They have been involved throughout the entire process, from start to finish.

Without the support of the Innovation Center we wouldn’t be where we are now. The communication has been great, and the people are approachable and contribute valuable insights. The Innovation Center is familiar with the processes within the UMCG, which allows them to establish connections more easily. All in all, I highly recommend collaborating with the Innovation Center.
