De Hersenstichting is contributing € 1 million to research by the UMCG, Wageningen University & Research and Winclove Probiotics. The research is led by Prof. Iris Sommer and is carried out by experts in neurology, psychiatry, cell biology, microbiology, dietetics and gastrointestinal diseases.
Our researchers want to learn more about the influence of the gut in common brain disorders. These are Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In the Netherlands, more than 400,000 people suffer from one of these conditions.
