My current research focuses on PKAN (Pantothenate Kinase-Associated Neurodegeneration). PKAN mainly affects children and is caused by the gene PANK2. PANK2 is involved in the biosynthesis of Coenzyme A (CoA), a molecule essential for life. We are uncovering how CoA functions in brain cells and exploring new ways to restore it — including vitamin-based therapies, special diets, and support from the gut microbiome. Using various models like fruit flies, yeast cells and patient-derived cells, our research has brought us closer to understanding fundamental knowledge regarding CoA biology and CoA-related diseases. This work could potentially offer new hope to patients and families affected by PKAN.
