Dissection room

Facility
Most healthcare and biomedical professionals need to know about anatomy – the principles of body structure. The ex-vivo human body is an irreplaceable simulation model for anyone aspiring to an in-depth study of, or training with, real human anatomy. This model is available thanks to human full body donors registered with the Groningen body donation program, for which we are eternally grateful.

The dissection room facility brings together academically trained anatomists, skilled prosector staff, and the possibility for body preservation and storage, to offer optimal conditions for education, training, innovation, and research concerning human anatomy. Next to ex-vivo simulation models, the facility also offers extensive in-vivo anatomy expertise, mainly along the anatomical visualization using ultrasound. By managing the dissection room facility, the Section Anatomy & Medical Physiology safeguards adequate use of donated human bodies and other anatomy training tools, while optimizing the value of education, training, and research outcomes through internal activities and targeted collaborations and interactions. Prime collaborations include the Simulation Center UMCG, the European Medical School Oldenburg-Groningen, and Enatom

Services

Educational, training, and/or research activities concerning human anatomy, with or without donated human bodies, may be applied for by anyone holding a medical, biomedical, or paramedical bachelor’s degree. All applications are assessed by an internal review board. Interested? Please contact Dr. Carola .J. Haven.

The dissection room facility is located in the basement of the Medical Faculty and covers an area of approx. 1000 square meters. The facility has two main dissection rooms (capacity: 60 and 40 people), one of which can be subdivided into smaller compartments. There are three methods of body preservation (Fresh Frozen, fix embalming, and Thiel embalming), each with its own ideal scope and purpose. The facility has access to hundreds of high-quality anatomical specimens and models, covering together the entire body, literally from head to toe.
