Connecting Fragmented Ageing Research through the European Federation for Aging Research

The European Research Institute for the Biology of Ageing (ERIBA), part of the UMCG and the University of Groningen, has partnered with leading centres across Europe to launch the European Federation for Aging Research (EFAR). This newly established network unites researchers from prominent ageing research institutes, with members now representing 15 European countries.

The formation of EFAR has been formally marked by a collectively authored opinion article, published in Nature Aging in which the founding members - including Professor Folkert Kuipers, Scientific Director ERIBA - make the case for stronger European collaboration, focused research funding, and a joint approach to the challenges posed by an ageing population.

The first EFAR conference will take place in Cologne, 14–16 October 2026, providing a platform for scientists across Europe to exchange knowledge and foster new partnerships in ageing research.
