Continuity during the lifecourse and in the next generation

Why do psychiatric disorders often persist throughout life and across generations? Could early intervention, especially in children, prevent this continuity within individuals or across generations? Finding answers to these pressing questions drives my research. This, by (a) bridging the artificial divide between child and adult psychiatry, (b) focusing on understanding changes in manifestation of psychopathology throughout life and the steady increase in psychiatric and somatic comorbidity and (c) making use of the largest data resources at UMCG and worldwide to identify the multitude of (transdiagnostic, including genetic) factors explaining lifespan and familial transmission patterns.
