Behavioural, psychological, and social determinants of health in the Czech Republic

This dissertation of Radka Žídková focuses on behavioral, psychological, and social determinants of health in the Czech Republic, and also explores how cultural factors  relate to health. Health is essential for a fulfilling life and active participation in society, and understanding the factors that influence it is crucial for effective public health policy.

The thesis examines, among other topics, the willingness of Czech citizens to get vaccinated against COVID-19, highlighting the role of factors such as age, gender, education level, and trust in the government. It also investigates the impact of spirituality and religiosity on adolescent health in a predominantly secular context. Furthermore, it addresses the role of negative emotions such as guilt, shame, and low self-esteem, and their association with both mental and physical health issues.

The research also analyzes the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on psychosomatic symptoms in the Czech population. Lastly, through an international comparison, the dissertation explores the relationship between national cultural dimensions and disease burden in 69 countries.

The dissertation emphasizes the interplay between individual, psychological, social, and cultural factors in shaping health outcomes and highlights the importance of context-specific research for developing effective health interventions.
