Alejandro Marmolejo Garza winner BCN Dissertation Award
During his PhD project, Alejandro Marmolejo Garza investigated cellular mechanisms contributing to neurodegeneration. He combined patient-derived iPSC models (iPSC-differentiated microglia, brain organoids) functional mitochondrial assays with bioinformatic analysis to understand how specific cellular pathways could contribute to neuronal vulnerability, particularly in Alzheimer’s disease models. This combination demonstrates not only exceptional technical versatility but also a rare ability to integrate wet-lab experiments with advanced bioinformatics.
A central achievement of his work is the elucidation of mitochondrial and metabolic mechanisms that drive cellular vulnerability in Alzheimer’s disease, including mitochondrial calcium dysregulation, ferroptotic pathways, and species-specific metabolic reprogramming. These integrated approaches allowed him to link molecular changes to functional phenotypes, providing both molecular insights and translational value to his findings.
Alejandro has a solid publication record, his work being documented in ten papers/reviews, published in a wide range of journals (including Cell Death and Disease, Cell Calcium and Nature Communications), of which five as a first author. During his PhD trajectory, Alejandro showed great enthusiasm, creativity, independence, technical versatility and also scientific maturity. His multidimensional approach aligns seamlessly with the interdisciplinary mission of BCN, where molecular neuroscience, cellular behavior, and cognition meet. Alejandro’s dissertation exemplifies the innovative and integrative neuroscience that BCN aims to foster, making him a highly deserving recipient of the BCN Dissertation Award.
His excellent work was performed in the labs of Prof. Erik Boddeke (BMS - UMCG) and Prof. Amalia Dolga (Molecular Pharmacology, FSE, RUG).
