Pathophysiology of delirium in older patients

Delirium is a severe neuropsychiatric syndrome, characterized by acute onset of cognitive impairment. It often affects older patients and significantly impacts clinical outcomes and recovery. Despite its high burden in hospital settings, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remain poorly understood, complicating prevention and treatment strategies. My PhD research investigates the neuroimmunological pathways participating in delirium, with a focus on neuroinflammation and blood-brain barrier dysfunction in the human brain. Using post-mortem tissue analysis and translational methodology, I aim to investigate the inflammatory responses that contribute to acute cognitive decline, manifesting as delirium.
